The more I look at Cosmc’s, the more I wonder why all this could not have been done in a free-standing “McCafe” location. Considering the historical investment the system has made in McCafe, why start from scratch with a trade name that nobody’s ever heard of? I can think of a few possibilities:
* The CEO wants a project with his name on it as part of his McDonald’s legacy.
* Considering the colossal investment McDonald’s Owner/Operators have made in McCafe it might be problematic to say NO to offering freestanding McCafe franchises.
* Or, this is just an ego thing. As we’ve discussed before, when people get the top jobs in restaurant companies, investors and the media assume they are “restauranteurs”. After a while, the executive starts believing their own hype and starts making mistakes. .

Making a Starbucks drive through look fast doesn't seem to be a winning strategy.
The quotes from the following article are interesting because it's the exact same McSpin used to sell McCafe to Owner/Operators way back when.
“It’s a space that we believe we have the right to win,” he added.

This just seems like a double down on the flailing McCafe, except MUCH more expensive.
